Poetical imagery is the result of a link between the emotional experiences of the poet and the phenomena and events surrounding him. Thus, the emotions and the concepts that the poet intends to transfer to the audience, are inevitably expressed in the form of words and phrases; the poet as an artist, by using imagination, displays a painting. Such elevated work can be wrapped up in many rhetorical devices or expressed in a simple way. Using imaginative techniques and imagery provide artistic work. This paper is an analysis of the characteristics of poetic images and their position in lyrical poetry, with a look at five love poems: Khosrow Shirin by Nizami, Shirin and Khosrow by Dehlavi, Khosrow and Shirin by Hatefi, Farhad and Shirin by Vahshi BafqiandKhosrow & Shirin by Shahab Tarshizi.

Abstract The present study analyzes the image of Mirza’s revolt and his character in the poetry of Guilani poets focusing on fertility myth and the archetype of martyred god. It is argued that the historical uprising of Mirza has entered into the domain of poetry making him into a god-hero. Mirza is a vegetation god who rises against tyranny and dictatorship of the time. His killing/death is a conscious choice in order to give awareness to the society. He is reborn every year as a tree and his blood makes the jungles of Guilan fertile.

Bahram V or Bahram Gur (438-420 A D) is one of the kings whose life is intermingled with stories and legends in historical and literary sources of the Islamic era. Occasionally he is portrayed as a legendary king or a warrior champion. One of the well-known stories about Bahram Gur is the story of his battle with the lions in order to get the crown, which is mentioned in Ferdowsi’s Shahnameh as well as in many historical sources of Islamic era. This paper aims to compare the story of Bahramʼs coronation and his battle with the lions in Ferdowsi’s Shahnameh and in the most important historical sources of Islamic era. It is argued that the origins of Ferdowsi’s Shahnameh and the most important historical sources of Islamic era about coronation of Bahram Gur and his battle with the lions are the same. Thus in the study of Sassanid history, Shahnameh should be regarded as a historical source along with other historical sources.

One of the subjects, which have been reflected in Persian literary texts in different ways is the ritual of seeking justice. Some of the most famous ways displayed by rulers are the chain of justice, flag of justice, and wearing red clothes, and by the subjects standing on the roads where kings pass, baring the head, and throwing dust on the head. When some form of seeking justice became obsolete, new ways were invented. Persian literature has reflected these forms of seeking justice even after they have become obsolete. Some poets have looked upon these with ethics in mind while some others have considered them as principles of justice.

Conceptual metaphor in cognitive linguistics helps to understand the intellectual system and mental structure of the speakers and determine nations’ general visions through experience. Applying conceptual metaphor can determine poets’ personal style, inspirational sources, amount of innovation and finally their poetical position. This study has analyzed Salman Harati, the contemporary Iranian poet's works. It is argued that Harati’s innovative use of conventional metaphors and unconventional metaphors stands out in his poetry. The link between elements of Nature, ideology and social, cultural and political events has led to the creation of cohesive metaphors surmising some ideas such as being is Nature, life is motion, and life is is a challenge; hence, the cohesiveness in his poetry.

Abstract The ideas of ancient Iranians are the main sources of the thoughts and ideas of Nizami Ganjavi. His major interest was in ancient Iran and the ancient Pahlavi language. He had applied pre-Islamic context of Iran in several of his poems, hence the formation of many court metaphors in Khamsa. This paper studies the effect of ancient thoughts on formation of court metaphors based on theory of cognitive metaphor. It is argued that metaphors such as Mohammad is the king, the sun is the king, king is the light, and Khovarnegh is utopia illustrate that notions of Iranshahri and its components such as belief in utopia and utopian king, blessing of God and Mithraic rituals have played a significant role in formation of the most important court metaphors of Nizami Ganjavi.

Fazel Nazari is one of the contemporary poets who is famous for his ghazals. Fazel is under the influence of Indian style; on the other hand, his works have some stylistic features making a bridge between classic forms of poetry and modern forms. So far, he has published five collections of poetry, entitled Geryeha-ye Emperatour (Emperor’s Tears), Aqaliyat (Minority), Anha (Those) and Zed (Opposite), and Ketab (a book). In this paper, all the ghazals in his published books are analyzed statistically and stylistically. Nazari’s poems have some structural features such as attention to the number of the verses, special refrains, and gentle rhymes. In addition, they contain some special meaning- making techniques giving allegorical function to the poems. Frequent subjects are integrating love and mysticism and social issues; he is under the influence of Hafez in social issues. These stylistic features have captured the attention of his readers.

Yaghma-ye Jandaqi (1196-1276) is one of the famous poets and famous writers of Qajar era. The collection of his works include letters, prose writings and poems. Most of his reputation, in addition to his ghazals and masnavi, is due to his lampoons. Yaghma has paid special attention to new styles in his lampoons. In this paper, two of Yagma's innovations in lampoon are studied. One of these innovations is his use of the form of Ta'azia (Passion play) for lampoon. Another innovation is his use of mock epic not common in Persian literature.

One area of research in classical Persian literature is the attribution of poems to different poets making researchers cautious in dealing with such biographies and collections. Yet, one cannot ignore such attributions all together as there are sometimes instances where one can recognize the true writer of a piece of poetry. In this paper, with the help of two collections, one recent and one old, as well as the collected poems of Kamālodin Ismāil it is argued that a piece of his poetry has been of wrongly attributed to Farkhāri in Dowlatshāh Samarghandi’s Poets’ Biography.
