Persian literature has some excellent samples of fantastic literature. One of the distinctive features of fantastic literature is extraordinary events which confuse the reader about their being real. The story of Daquqi in the third book of the Masnavi of Rumi is one of the best examples of fantastic literature. In the present study, this story is analyzed based on the theories of Freud and Tzvetan Todorov to show its similarities and differences with those of fantastic literature. It is argued that most of the characteristics of fantasticliterature can be seen in the story of Daquqi. Based on Todorov chart, this story can be an example of fantastic/uncanny or miracle/uncanny literature. In Daquqi story features such as perspective, focalization, association, polyphony, themes and contrasts play a role in creating doubt as the main characteristic of fantastic literature.
