Abstract

The dramatic adaptation of Persian Classics has been of great concern to Iranian playwrights. Among Persian classics, Mantiq al-Tayr has been of great interest to writers. But these dramatic adaptations are devoid of characterization and dramatic action because of the differences between Persian and western modes of storytelling. Greimas’s actantial schema is based on three factors: wanting-to-do, knowing-how-to-do, and being-able-to-do.This theory gives the dramatist a chance to create actant characters. In this paper, certain female characters in Mantiq al-Tayr have been selected and analyzed with regard to the Greimasian model; consequently, a pragmatic paradigm has emerged by which the dramatists can create actant characters. The tabulation of results reveal that a few tales of Mantiq al-Tayr like "Shaykh San'ān and the Christian Girl" stand out as examples with classical and linear structure revealing potentials for dramatic characterization.
