Symbolic expression is one of the stylistic features of contemporary poetry making ambiguity and artistic literary texture thus getting the reader involved in the text. Shamlu's society was stifled by the dictatorship (1304-1379 S.H.) that led him to use extensively dark and light symbolism in his poetry creating myths which show he was interested in binary oppositions. It is argued that Shamlu uses binaries such as imprisonment-freedom, love-hate, solitude-crowds, sadness-happiness, earth-sky, and human-God which are sometimes manipulated paradoxically. Thus the narrative structure of most of his poems can be explained through such binaries.
