Interrogative sentence’s Secondary meanings in poems of Forough Farrokhzad’s “Reflecting on another birth: let us believe in the beginning of the cold season”

Abstract

this article's topic is to reflect on interrogative sentences' Secondary meanings in Forough's poetry. In literature, the sentence's sense can alter depending on the speaker's intention. The topic of the science of meanings is “discussing these changes.” This article aims to explain how Forough uses the polysemous capacity of interrogative sentences. This article seeks to answer the question of what are the interrogative sentence’s secondary meanings in Forough's poetry and why we should emphasize the secondary meanings of these sentences? The studies and surveys show that totally, there are 119 interrogative sentences in Forough's poems in two collections “ Another birthday poems and Let Us Believe in the Beginning of the Cold Season , (with repetitions), which have secondary meanings. Based on the model of Dr. Shamisa's book “ Meanings”,we found 21 secondary meanings in these questions, and the repeating frequency of secondary meaning was the is 63 times (53%) and 56 times (47%), in Another birthday and Let Us Believe collection respectively. The founding shows that interrogative sentences in Forough's poems are always used indirectly in semantic roles besides questions. Among them, the meanings of emphasizing and drawing attention and expressing helplessness and despair have the highest rate of secondary meanings. Also, The most of the interrogative sentences have some other secondary meanings. According to this, we can say that Forough's main aim in posing these questions is to attract attention, accuracy and make the audience think and emphasize his statements.
