Abstract

"Khatt-e Khun" (Line of Blood) by Ali Mousavi Garmaroudi is one of the most prominent contemporary religious poems, which recreates the event of Ashura in a novel form through the use of a symbolic and multi-layered language. This research conducts a semiotic analysis of this poem based on Roland Barthes' model of the five codes. The primary objective is to investigate how the network of meanings in the poem is formed through the intersection of these five codes (hermeneutic, proairetic, symbolic, cultural, and semantic).
The findings indicate that the "hermeneutic code" plays a key role in the text's openness and active engagement of the reader by creating enigmas and suspense. Through the use of "semantic suspension" and "narrative gaps," the poet draws the audience into an interpretive game. This code is present not only at the macro level but throughout all verses of the poem, transforming it into an "open" and "writerly" text (in the Barthian sense). In "Khatt-e Khun," actions are not narrated in a classical, sequential chain but appear as "conceptual sequences" and "semantic transformations." Alongside this, the "symbolic code" creatively redefines symbols such as blood and the sword, blending them with new semantic nuances. Furthermore, binary oppositions (right/wrong, death/life, combat/tawaf) form the poem's fundamental structure of binary contrast. The "cultural code," relying on the audience's prior knowledge of Shiite culture and Quranic concepts, enriches the semantic depth of the work. The "semantic code" and fundamental ontological concepts constitute the deepest layer of meaning in this poem, based on the connotative significations of key words such as "line", "blood", "tree".
The results of the study suggest that the intersection of these codes elevates "Khatt-e Khun" beyond a simple historical narrative, transforming it into a dynamic and interpretable text that facilitates the emergence of new meanings with each reading.
