The aim of this article is to analyze the innovations of Ibn Nasuh Shirazi, a poet of the eighth century, and the role of couriers in his Mohabatnameh. Mohabatnameh is a subgenre of Dahnameh (ten epistles). Dahnameh itself is a romantic and narrative lyric using both ghazal and masnavi forms based on the exchange of letters between the lover and the beloved. Poets used to follow the style of Awhadi Maragheyi’s Dahnameh but Ibn Nasuh introduced some innovations. He added to the number of couriers in his poem using them to create innovative imageries. Mohabatnameh has ten couriers: the Moon, the Sun, Saba (Zephyr), North Wind, Comb, Mirror, Candle, Butterfly, Flower, and Nightingale. In fact, Ibn Nasuh has built his Dahnameh not based on the letters, but on these ten couriers. In other words, not only the letters are shaped on the basis of a dialogue between the lover and the beloved in Mohabatnameh, but the couriers are also advancing the narrative. There is a pleasant interaction between the courier, the transmitter and the receiver. Moreover, these ten couriers have a major role in creating contents and constructing of imagery and atmosphere. The most important courier of Mohabatnameh is the sixth one, the Mirror. This courier is the turning point of the narrative in Mohabatnameh. The beloved changes after seeing the reality of love and the unity of the lovers in the mirror. Then arrangements are made for the union.
Keywords: mirror, ten couriers, Dahnameh, Mohabatnameh, innovations of Ibn Nasuh Shirazi.
