According to the Shahnameh, when Khosrow Parviz fled to Rome in battle with Bahram Choobin, he crossed, Bahleh, Karestan, Manuy, and entered in the city of Varigh. In this city, he wrote a letter to the Roman emperor and after receiving an army from the Romans, he returned to Azerbaijan and met Bahram in the Duke Plain and defeated him. Because Muslim geographers did not have extensive information about the areas under the control of the Roman Empire, the names of these places were either not recorded in the geographical sources of the Islamic period or were mentioned in other names. In this article, an attempt has been made to determine the location of these areas and in some cases their names based on reliable sources. The research method is descriptive analytical by using library resources.
It was found that the position of Bahleh tribe is in the distance between Hit city and Raqqah. and the meaning of Karestan in Shahnameh is the border city of Harran. Manuy and Varigh are derived from the word (Mannuorrha Auyreth). The first part of this name (Mannu), Manuy is the name of the fortress in Edessa and (Aureth) is the ancient name of the city (Irridu) which is located between Karkamish and Harran. According to the description of Theophylact and Ferdowsi from the battlefield, it became clear that the Duke is also a common name in Shahnameh and refers to the path of the difficult passage and the precipices of the battlefield.
