Debate is a style of expression that dates back to pre-Islamic Iran. The poets of each period have used debate to achieve specific aims based on the nature and talents of the poets and traditions of that period. The intellectual, social, and political atmosphere of society in Nimaee poetry has also caused extensive changes in debate; therefore, this study with a descriptive-analytic
approach tries to answer these fundamental questions: what are the differences between Nimaee debates and the classical one? Furthermore, what are the factors of these innovations? It argues that despite traditional debates, which have always consisted of two sides_ of absolute right and of absolute falsehood_ where one of the challengers wins over the other, in Nimaee debates one of the challengers mostly helps the other get closer to the truth. Contemporary poets in a new form resulted from the freedom of expression in artistic creation try to creat an interactive atmosphere, where they are engaged in two-person or multi-person conversations as well as monologues or soliloquies. Moreover, through the use of symbolic and carnival characters as well as the reconciliation of opposing elements in the atmosphere of conversations, Nimaee debates try to practice social criticism, and through using rhetorical propositions, they try to create a polyphonic atmosphere.
